Wastewater is created by residences, institutions, and commercial and industrial establishments. Raw influent (sewage) includes household waste liquid from toilets, baths, showers, kitchens, sinks, and so forth that is disposed of via sewers. Municipal wastewater treatment involves physical, chemical, and biological processes to "clean up" the water, removing contaminants such as ammonia, phosphates, nitrates, and solid wastes.  The "clean" water can then be discharged into a local river or stream with  a lessened environmental impact.

The APES classes toured Lansdale's wastewater treatment plant to get a better understanding of the process - scale, procedures, layout, effectiveness.
